What is Januvia®/Janumet®?

Januvia® is the trade name for sitagliptin, an oral medication prescribed to adults with diabetes mellitus type 2. It was developed, and is currently marketed in the United States by Merck & Co. Janumet® is a combination pill that also contains metformin, a diabetes medication that suppresses glucose production by the liver.

Who is potentially liable for your injuries?

In cases involving dangerous or defective products, including prescription drugs, you may generally seek damages against anyone in the “chain of distribution,” including the manufacturer, any testing lab or facility, the doctor or physician who prescribed it, a pharmaceutical sales representative, or a hospital, clinic or pharmacy that dispensed it.

What side effects or health concerns have been linked to Januvia®/Janumet®?

In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated a revision to the warning label on both Januvia® and Janumet®, requiring that it inform users of the potential risks of pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. The drug had already been linked to cases of severe pancreatitis. A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), in February, 2013, found that people using Januvia had twice the rate of acute pancreatitis as those who did not. Another recent study showed increases in pancreatic and beta cell mass in Januvia users. These factors are symptomatic of pancreatic cancer.
