Byetta® is the product name for exenatide, a prescription drug used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 in adults. Approved for use in the United States in 2005, Byetta® was developed and is manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, in San Diego, and is marketed by Eli Lilly. The drug is injected twice daily, within 60 minutes of the first and last meal of the day. Byetta® is a synthetic version of a hormone found in the saliva of the Gila monster, and works by enhancing insulin secretion.
In cases involving dangerous or defective products, including prescription drugs, damages may be sought against anyone in the “chain of distribution,” including the manufacturer, any testing lab or facility, the doctor or physician who prescribed it, a pharmaceutical sales representative, or a hospital, clinic or pharmacy that dispensed it.
In 2007, pursuant to reports of acute pancreatitis, the FDA required that a warning be added to the label on Byetta®. In 2008, four pancreatitis deaths were reported of people who had used exenatides. The FDA has also expressed concern about the increased incidence of thyroid cancer in people who have used liraglutide, a drug in the same class as exenatide. There have also been assertions that Byetta® can lead to hypoglycemia.
We handle all pancreatic, thyroid and bladder cancer claims for people who have taken prescription Byetta®, as well as actions seeking damages for severe pancreatitis.
